Water Fountains
A water fountain is in essence a piece of unique structural design where water is made to pour down in to a basin or is made to jet up in to the air. It can natural or man-made. A water fountain can be used for drinking water, ornamentation and decoration and to create a dramatic effect. The term “fountain” comes from the root Latin words “fontis” or “fons” which means a spring or a source.
Originally, fountains were entirely functional. The designs would be such that the fountain would be connected to aqueducts or streams which were the main sources from where the jetting water would come. The sole purposes that the fountains served in their initial years were to provide drinking water and water for purposes of bathing and washing. It was first time in Classical Rome that people thought of using water fountains for purposes of embellishment and placed them out into the courtyards, porticos and gardens. The architecture of fountains and springs saw the apex of architectural excellence in the palaces and mansions of Moorish Spain. This was during the 14th century. There on in the 15th and 16th century water fountains was a favorite piece in all Italian Renaissance gardens. Following, in the 17th century fountains became a common view in the Gardens of Versailles. Finally the most decorative fountains appeared in the gardens of Rome during the 17th and 18th century.
In the contemporary age, water fountains have become rather practical. Nowadays one can either find drinking water fountains or common village fountains that are a source of clean drinking water. Or else they may be made purely for recreational or decorating purposes to embellish the park or the home garden. Indoor water fountains also make the interiors elegant. One of the most common forms is the splash water fountains that help people to chill out during the hot summers.
For a fountain to work, sheets of water flow out on diverse surfaces including metal, stone or concrete. Or else a water fountain may also resemble a natural cascade to give it a unique look.
Until the early years of the 20th century, the architects had to primarily depend on the force of gravity to make the water spray or spout into the air for a fountain. With technical advancements, nowadays it is actually possible to mechanically pump the water for the fountains. One good example is the modern musical fountain that is a unique amalgamation of spouts of moving water, recorded music tracks and attractive colored lights. All of these are controlled by a computer that helps create the unique effect.
